Named after founder Thomas Shaughnessy, the former president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Shaughnessy is Vancouver’s oldest and most prestigious neighbourhood. It’s bordered by 16th Avenue on the north, King Edward Avenue on the south, Oak Street on the east and East Boulevard on the west. The neighbourhood itself is relatively small, only nine blocks long and ten blocks wide, with around 350 homes built between 1907 and 1910 in the Craftsman style.
Low crime rates, custom-made mansions, and spacious heritage homes characterize the neighbourhood. While there are no schools in the neighbourhoods, there are a few within walking distance.
Shaughnessy is home to the wealthiest residents of the city. To afford a home here, you would need to budget for at least $4.5 million, more than double the price of houses in the rest of Vancouver. In fact, Shaughnessy is home to several of Canada’s most expensive homes, with price tags reaching up to $33 million for waterfront properties, making it clear why the neighbourhood is reserved for the creme de la creme of Vancouver.
