Yaletown is one of Vancouver's biggest success stories. Prior to the 1986 World’s Fair (Expo ‘86), the neighbourhood was largely composed of railroad buildings, warehouses, and factories. Many of those buildings are still standing, but the entire neighbourhood was improved by a redevelopment initiative that has turned Yaletown into one of the Lower Mainland’s most attractive places to live.
Because of the neighbourhood’s more recent development, the city was able to take a more organized approach to redevelopment. This means that existing buildings, including the former Canadian Pacific Roundhouse (now the Roundhouse Community Centre), have been preserved. While much of the land, that was vacant land, is now relatively new multi-residential units of concrete and glass. Existing industrial buildings are a combination of commercial storefronts and offices with loft-type apartments above.
