Willingdon Heights is a neighborhood found in the city of Burnaby, British Columbia in Canada. The neighborhood is named after the main Burnaby thoroughfare, called Willingdon Avenue, which connects North Burnaby with Kingsway and the Metrotown area in the southern part. It is made up of both new and old apartments; a unique architectural blend that allows the area to fully express itself and tell its residents and visitors of its rich history. Over the years, the neighborhood has grown to accommodate the growing resident population, but it still maintained its serene environment and retains an unmistakable charm.
The neighborhood is well-established and it has busy commercial sections along Hastings Street. Brentwood Mall, which is located to the east on Willingdon road, is another bustling center. Because of its location and services to residents and many other people in transit, the shopping experience caters to all budgets i.e. it offers affordable shopping for everyone who might want something in the area, offering a wide range of products to suit every taste too. As such, the shopping options are quite numerous and you're always spoilt for choice. The neighborhood has turned into a small commerce hub with a sprawling assortment of commercial real estate.
The neighborhood's closeness to major highway corridors makes it a prime place for both commercial and residential real estate. Much of the main areas are still dominated by older residential homes; but many are undergoing renovations or being replaced by modern, larger homes. Willingdon Heights was historically a middle-class neighborhood, but over time, this has changed and it has become a high-class real estate haven. The average household income now stands at just under 80,000 Canadian dollars. To take full advantage of the space, real estate developers are building more high-rise buildings. Despite its proximity to major roads and thoroughfares, Willingdon Heights is rather quiet and many of its residents highly regard this feature. The residents also view it as a great place to raise a family and enjoy a leisurely lifestyle.
For leisure activities, Willingdon has lots to give. The Willingdon Community Centre offers fitness and lifestyle classes among other things. There are several parks in the neighborhood which are good for taking a walk or some outdoor activities like picnics, gaming, and even outdoor ceremonies. Willingdon Heights Park is the largest park in the area and has several amenities that will be appreciated by those who love being outdoors. There is a soccer field, tennis court and a pool among other things.
The neighborhood is largely English speaking, but there has been a rise in other languages over the years such as Cantonese. This has led to a diverse population in Willingdon. Currently, nearly half of the neighborhood's population is made up of foreign nationals. This makes for a nice melting pot of cultures from all over the world and this is another reason why the neighborhood attracts so much attention in real estate circles.
Hastings Street is famous for being a longtime shopping street for all Burnaby residents throughout the generations. Up until the present moment, The Heights still has a wide-ranging combination of old and new shops, boutique stores, cafes, and fast-food restaurants.
This stretch of bike-only road runs from Burrard Inlet on the southern part to the Fraser River on the northern side. It cuts right across the Willingdon Heights neighborhood. At its two ends, the bikeway links up with the other trail networks in the area.
It might not be as big and packed like the Willingdon Heights Park, but this medium-scale city park has its unique features that are popular with the residents. With its swings and slides and various other playground equipment, it is especially attractive for families residing in nearby homes in search of some open-air space for their kids to be active and burn off some energy. The great outdoors gives a welcome feeling of refreshment and West Sells Park will leave you revitalized.
