Strathcona is the oldest residential neighbourhood in Vancouver, bordered by Chinatown, Clark Drive, and Canadian National Railway and BNSF Railway classification yards. It was previously named East End but changed its name to Strathcona in the 1960s.
A big part of the Downtown Eastside area lies within Strathcona, but it’s still a separate neighbourhood in Vancouver. Most of the community in Strathcona comprises of working-class residents coming from various ethnic backgrounds. It’s the only neighbourhood in Vancouver where English is not the primary spoken language. 61% of the residents have reported Chinese as their mother tongue, with English sitting at only 24%.
In recent years, the area has been subjected to a denitrification process which is intended to reinforce the economic disparity of the neighbourhood. Most houses are current heritage houses with a lot of the older buildings being renovated to make the area more modern and appealing.
