West End is a neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, located between Coal Harbour, Downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park, English Bay, and Kitsilano. Although it’s not the most extensive area in Vancouver, West End is one of the liveliest and demographically versatile neighbourhoods. The community consists of people of all ages, incomes, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. Thanks to this versatility and favourable position, it has become one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in all of Canada.
Most properties are built in the 60s and 70s, but there are also a few new construction homes built after the turn of the century. A few notable West End early residential architecture buildings have been preserved, including Gabriola, a 1900s grand mansion, Kensington Palace, and a few heritage houses in Barclay Heritage Square.
Looking at the pricing profile of West End, we can say that it’s considered one of the more expensive neighbourhoods. There are one-bedroom condos with prices starting at $450,000 in the older buildings, but on the other end of the scale, multiple-bedroom single-family homes can fetch a cost of several million dollars for two or three-bedroom houses. Because it’s ideally situated near the financial and business district, most units in West End are rented by professionals working in the surrounding office buildings.
